AES Encryption Tool
Encrypt text or one small file in your browser with authenticated AES-256-GCM. Nothing is uploaded. The selected PBKDF2 work factor trades a little waiting time for more password-guessing work.
How do I encrypt text or a file with AES?
Choose Encrypt, select text or a local file, and enter a long passphrase. Download or copy the versioned JSON container. To decrypt it, choose Decrypt and provide that container and the same passphrase. A wrong passphrase or changed data fails authentication and does not return plaintext.
Frequently asked questions
How do I encrypt text or a file with AES?
Choose Encrypt, select text or a local file, and enter a long passphrase. Download or copy the versioned JSON container. To decrypt it, choose Decrypt and provide that container and the same passphrase. A wrong passphrase or changed data fails authentication and does not return plaintext.
Are my passphrase and files uploaded?
No. Encryption and decryption run in this browser with Web Crypto. Your passphrase and selected content are not sent to UsefulVerse or stored by this tool. Save the encrypted output yourself; losing your passphrase means the data cannot be recovered.
What happens if I use the wrong passphrase?
AES-GCM authenticates the encrypted data. If the passphrase or container is wrong or altered, decryption fails and this tool does not return plaintext.
Can UsefulVerse recover my passphrase?
No. The tool does not send or save it. Keep your own passphrase and a separate copy of the encrypted container; without the passphrase, the encrypted content is unrecoverable.
Does the tool have a file-size limit?
Yes. Text is limited to 1 MiB, source files to 8 MiB, and encrypted JSON containers to 12 MiB so the browser can process them locally.
