Example
A retail EAN-13 scan returns its digits and check-digit status. A Code 128 scan shows only the text encoded in the symbol.
How barcode scanning works
The browser barcode detector reads the selected image or live camera frame locally. UPC-A may be detected as EAN-13 with a leading zero. Camera and image support depend on this browser.
Barcode scanner questions
Which barcode formats can it read?
It uses formats supported by the browser barcode detector, including Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-E when available. UPC-A can be returned as EAN-13 with a leading zero. Unsupported formats are not claimed as readable.
Are my image or camera frames uploaded?
No. Scanning runs in the browser. Camera frames are read only while the camera is active and stop when you press Stop or leave the page.
Does scanning identify a product or show its price?
No. It only returns the characters encoded in the symbol. It does not contact a product or price database.
Why might a code fail to scan?
The format may be unsupported, or the image may be blurry, small, curved, low-contrast or damaged. Try more light, focus, a closer crop or another rotation.
Does a valid check digit prove the barcode is assigned to my product?
No. A valid check digit only confirms the digits follow the format checksum. It does not prove ownership or official assignment.
Supported formats and limits
This tool reads data contained in a barcode only. It does not identify a product, look up prices or verify that a retail identifier was assigned to a seller. Blurry, damaged, small or unsupported codes may not scan.
