Example
For a child aged 6–10, the 2026 reference cost before childcare is NOK 7,523 in consumption plus NOK 3,811 for housing, less NOK 2,012 ordinary child benefit: NOK 9,322. With annual parent incomes of NOK 600,000 and NOK 400,000 and visitation class 2, the simplified one-home estimate is about NOK 3,900 per month after the NOK 1,690 visitation credit and rounding.
How the estimate works
The tool adds the 2026 age-based consumption amount and housing amount, adds the eligible net childcare cost you enter, and subtracts ordinary child benefit. For one primary home, it allocates this cost using the two entered annual incomes, applies the 5/6 cost ceiling and 25% income ceiling, subtracts the 2026 visitation credit and rounds to the nearest NOK 10. For shared residence it estimates the higher-income parent’s share above 50%.
Common questions
Does this set a legally binding amount?
No. Parents can agree privately, and NAV alone makes a public determination. This is a simplified comparison, not an NAV decision or its full calculator.
Does page language change these rules?
No. The interface is translated, but the rates and formula shown are Norwegian and dated 2026.
Why do the rates have a date?
NAV and the Ministry update reference amounts during the year, normally from 1 July. This version uses rates effective 1 July 2026; check the linked official tables before relying on a result.
Scope and limits
Norway only; one child per calculation, under 18. This simplified scenario does not reproduce NAV’s full income definition, tax and capacity-to-pay calculation, childcare support/tax relief, child income, multiple-child allocation, unusual visitation schedules, extra support or international cases. The user-entered childcare amount should be the eligible net monthly amount after any support or deductions the user knows apply. Income is simplified annual gross income, not an official NAV assessment. Do not use it as an award, legal advice or a promise of what either parent must pay.
