Example

If the purchase price is NOK 250,000, freight and insurance to the Norwegian border are NOK 10,000, and the one-off tax from the official calculator is NOK 40,000, the customs value is NOK 260,000 and import VAT at 25% is NOK 65,000. Add the current scrap deposit, any greenhouse-gas tax and other fees you enter.

How the estimate works

The VAT base uses the purchase price, freight and insurance to the Norwegian border. You enter the one-off registration tax calculated by Skatteetaten from the car’s technical data and age; this tool does not reproduce that complex formula. It adds the official scrap deposit and any greenhouse-gas charge and fees you provide.

Common questions

Why must I enter the one-off registration tax?

This tax depends on the vehicle group and technical data such as weight, CO₂, NOx, engine power and cylinder capacity. Use the official Skatteetaten vehicle import calculator and enter its result.

Which exchange rate should I use?

Enter NOK per one unit of the purchase currency using the customs exchange rate and clearance timing that apply to your case. This tool does not fetch live rates.

Does this include technical approval and registration?

No. It estimates the main taxes and fees you enter. Technical approval, compliance changes, transport inside Norway, repairs, insurance and other registration costs are outside this estimate.

Does every car pay the same registration tax?

No. Vehicle group, fuel and emissions, weight, technical data, first-registration date, used-car deduction and exemptions can change the tax. Confirm the exact amount using the official calculator.
