Norway Student Loan-to-Grant Estimator

Understand how Norway’s Lånekassen may convert part of a student basis loan into a grant after study progress and a calendar-year income and asset check. The page explains the Norwegian scheme in your chosen language; the rules stay Norwegian.

Your figures are calculated on this device and are not uploaded or stored.

Use the tool

Norwegian Lånekassen rules · 2026 conversion thresholds · checked 17 October 2026 · language choice does not change the country or rules.

Enter the basis-loan amount that may be converted. Do not include additional loans, tuition loans or other debt here. Use the gross personal and capital income considered by Lånekassen, not take-home pay. Some benefits use a separate lower threshold and are outside this simplified model. Net assets means assets minus debt, using the figure Lånekassen assesses for the calendar year.

Optional repayment illustration

Enter your own interest rate and term. The result is a generic illustration, not an official Lånekassen schedule.

Enter the basis loan, calendar-year figures and study progress to explore a scenario.

Example

For a NOK 170,368 basis loan, 60 of 60 supported credits passed, a completed eligible degree, qualifying living-away status, and income and assets below the limits, the academic maximum before the needs test is NOK 68,147. The actual conversion can differ.

How this estimate works

The model starts with the basis loan amount you received. It applies up to 15% for passed credits in proportion to supported credits and up to 25% for a completed eligible degree. It then subtracts the official gradual reductions for calendar-year income and net assets. Living-away status is required for the conversion scenario.

Common questions

What does “loan-to-grant conversion” mean?

A qualifying share of a Norwegian Lånekassen basis loan may later be changed into a grant after study progress and financial checks. It is not an upfront grant or a guaranteed award.

Which amounts should I enter?

Use the basis-loan amount and support months for the calendar year being checked. Enter personal and capital income and net assets from that year, and the credits supported and passed for the funded education.

Does it include extra loans or school tuition loans?

No. Only the eligible basis loan is used for the conversion estimate. Additional borrowing can be added separately to the optional repayment scenario, but it is not treated as convertible.

Is the result a Lånekassen decision?

No. The estimate excludes special grants, social-security income thresholds, corrections and exceptions. Lånekassen uses tax and study records and makes the decision.

Scope and limits

Norway only · 2026 calendar-year income and asset thresholds · higher-education basis loans only. This is not an eligibility decision or an official payment schedule. It does not model upper-secondary grants, international-student conditions, special benefits, disability or child grants, social-security income thresholds, student status exceptions, delayed study rules or individual corrections. Income and assets are assessed by calendar year, not academic year. Recheck current Lånekassen rules before relying on a scenario.
