How to use the comparison
Example: the TCS February 2026 comparison lists CHF 535 for the VW Tayron plug-in hybrid and CHF 109 for the Tesla Model Y in Bern. These are published model examples, not a custom estimate for your car.
What this comparison includes
Cantonal vehicle-tax rules are not uniform. This page reproduces a dated comparative table for six named vehicle configurations; it does not apply one formula to all cantons or infer taxes for another vehicle.
Swiss vehicle-tax questions
Does this calculate the tax for my exact car?
No. It compares six named vehicle examples published by TCS in February 2026. A similar model or a different trim can have a different tax.
Why do cantonal amounts differ?
Cantons use different tax bases and incentives, such as weight, power, engine size, CO₂ or combinations. This comparison uses the published values rather than pretending one national formula exists.
Are electric cars always tax-free?
No. The published examples show different outcomes by canton; some charge tax and some show CHF 0 for a particular model. That does not mean every electric vehicle is exempt.
Can I estimate a partial year or another vehicle type?
Not with this reference table. Proration and vehicle categories follow different cantonal rules. Use the official calculator for your canton and vehicle.
Where does the data come from?
The comparison is based on TCS’s Swiss vehicle-tax report dated 28 February 2026. TCS rounds these example amounts to whole Swiss francs and notes that actual values may differ.
Scope and source
The figures are reference examples rounded to whole CHF, not an official invoice, legal advice or a personalised estimate. This table does not calculate partial-year registration, other vehicle classes or custom specifications. Check the source and your cantonal road-traffic office before relying on an amount.
