A quick example

Three natural Kings can open a meld. Add cards of that rank over later turns; seven natural cards make a clean canasta worth a 500-point bonus, while a meld with wild cards is a mixed canasta worth 300 bonus points.

How to play

This version uses two standard decks plus four jokers (108 cards), 15 cards per player and two cards drawn from the stock each turn. Meld at least three cards of one rank; twos and jokers are wild, with no more wild than natural cards. The first meld must meet the point threshold for your current score. A discard pile can be taken only with two natural cards matching its top card. A wild card or black three freezes the pile. You need at least one seven-card canasta to go out.

Frequently asked questions

What is a canasta?

A canasta is a meld of seven or more cards of the same rank. Seven natural cards make a clean canasta (500 bonus points); a meld containing a wild card is mixed (300 bonus points).

How do I take the discard pile?

Hold two natural cards matching the top discard. The pile is frozen when its top card is a wild card or black three. You must also be able to make a legal meld with the top card under your opening requirement.

When can I go out?

You may empty your hand only after your side has a seven-card canasta. The final card is discarded; this version does not use concealed-hand or partner-permission variations.

How is the opening meld calculated?

The minimum is 50 points below 1,500 cumulative points, 90 from 1,500, 120 from 3,000 and 150 from 5,000. Existing meld points are not counted toward a new opening.

Rules and limitations

This is a casual two-player variant against a simple local computer opponent, not online multiplayer or gambling. It uses the common 5,000-point target, 15-card deal, two-card draw and score-based opening thresholds. Table rules differ: this version does not implement partnership permission to go out, special concealed-hand bonuses, red-three replacement choices, or custom house rules. If the stock cannot supply two cards, the round is scored.
